Why I started JOIAAS

As a family medicine resident physician, I thought I knew everything I needed to know about being a new mother. I knew breastfeeding was best, and that all mothers needed to do to start nursing was increase hydration, increase skin to skin time with their baby, and pump in between.
Oh, and take prenatal vitamins.

I distinctly remember a time while holding my second newborn and reading to my then five-year old about how an octopus mother guards her eggs, and then dies once they hatch, and feeling like I could relate to this creature. The concept of withering away since becoming a mother felt too personal. That moment catalyzed my realization; this should not be normal.

Through my own personal experiences, I was able to see how drastically
my symptoms and mental health changed once my own nutrient depletion was corrected.

However, I was unable to consistently feed myself freshly prepared, nutrient dense, whole food meals while juggling the demands of caring for a newborn. This set-in motion my business concept, to create a meal delivery service designed for postpartum women. As we move forward, I am committed to ensuring that our service stands at the intersection of nutrition, support, and empowerment for all new mothers.

Our Story

At JOIAAS, we believe there is a sacred and transformative period that begins after childbirth that can set the foundation for a mother’s health and well-being. In Ayurvedic philosophy, it is believed that

the first 42 days postpartum dictates maternal health over the next 42 years.

Rooted in Eastern philosophy, our mission is to honor this vital time by providing carefully crafted, nutrient-dense meals that support recovery, balance, and nourishment for both mother and baby.

Our commitment lies in honoring ancient wisdom while respecting modern needs. We source wholesome, seasonal ingredients to create meals that are not only delicious but also promote vitality, energy, and healing. By fostering a nurturing experience through our meal delivery service, we aim to empower new mothers to embrace this transitional phase, allowing them to thrive physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

JOIAAS is dedicated to building a supportive community that values the importance of self-care,
connection, and mindful nourishment. Not only does maternal nutrition directly affect her
physical health, but according to research in Psychological Medicine,

adequate nutrition including key vitamins and omega-3 fatty
acids can lower the risk of postpartum depression.

According to a study published in Nutrients, maternal nutrition affects the quality and quantity of
breast milk. The World Health Organization reports that deficiencies in key micronutrients
during lactation can lead to complications such as impaired brain development in children.

By providing nutritious, convenient meals and fostering a supportive community here in Dane County,

we aspire to create a ripple effect of wellness that extends beyond the postpartum period. Together,

we cultivate health, happiness, and harmony during these precious early days of motherhood.
